How Social Media is Helping People Cope with Natural Distaters

The other week with Hurricane Harvey we experienced alot of outpouring of help and support for those who lost everything in Texas as a result of the tremendous flooding. Social media acted as a first responder in some ways allowing for people to request for help not only from law enforcement but from other people who were in the area as well.

This week we experienced similar scenarios however we discovered a whole new way to use social media for hurricanes as well. If you were on Social media at all you probably saw some events that people where interested such as "Point your fans at Irma so she will blow away from Florida" or my personal favorite that includes a meme from Sponge-bob Square-pants with Patrick star saying "why don't we take Florida and Push it somewhere else".

The fun continued into the local Athens, GA area with other events involving the University of Georgia including "Going white water rafting down South Lumpkin During Irma". Some of these event were criticized as being supportive of people not actually preparing for the storm however, I think most people saw them as a way to find some comic relief in the face of disaster.

I think that this week of hurricane memes and funny events along with the people reaching out to each other when help is needed on Facebook is showing a truly positive trend on social media. We have seen so many people fighting with each other over the past year on these sites that the comedy and community outreach is a breath of fresh air even under the terrible circumstances.
